Chalk, belts, and other arguments we have settled

Short answers to the equipment questions that come up on the floor every week.

Chalk

Use it. Grip is the first thing to fail on a heavy pull and the last thing worth training around. Block chalk is at both ends of the platforms; keep it in the bowl and the cleaner stays friendly.

Belts

A belt lets you brace harder against something. It does not hold your back together, and it does not make a bad position safe. We introduce them at roughly 80% of a tested maximum, and not before somebody can brace properly without one.

Straps

Fine on volume work where the point is the back, not the hands. Not fine on your top set, where grip failing is genuine information.

Shoes

Flat, hard soles for lifting. Running shoes compress unevenly under load and will quietly wreck your position. This matters far more than which brand of lifting shoe you buy.

Mirrors

There are none at the platforms. Watching yourself changes where your head goes, and where your head goes your spine follows. Ask a coach or film the set instead — both are better feedback than a mirror.
