Creative concept

The idea
the night was built on.

Monarch had run the same gala for nine years in the same ballroom, and attendance was flat. The brief was not to redecorate — it was to make a night people would describe to someone who had not been there. We proposed one idea: a room that moves through three distinct states, from reception to dinner to floor, with each change happening while the guests are looking somewhere else.

The challenge

The venue would only release the room at 14:00 on the day. That left five hours to build three environments in one space, with no rehearsal window and a 460-cover kitchen sharing the same service corridor as our load-in route.

The solution

We pre-built every scenic element as a flown module in our workshop, so the ballroom build was rigging rather than construction. The three states were achieved with lighting and two motorised drapes rather than furniture moves. Each transition was tied to a moment of designed distraction: a champagne round, a speech, a first note.

The execution

Load-in began at 14:05 and the room was in state one at 18:30, twenty-five minutes ahead of doors. Transitions ran at 20:40 and 22:55, both under eleven minutes, both while the room was watching a stage. The auction closed at 23:20 against a target set at 22:00.
