Thirty years of
roast engineering.

Kaldera is a family-held engineering company in Bend, Oregon. We design and hand-build coffee, cocoa and nut roasters for people who treat roasting as a measurable craft.

The story

We started because we were frustrated roasters.

In 1994 our founders could buy a beautiful roaster or a precise one — never both. So they cast their own drum, wired their own controller, and started measuring everything. That first machine still runs.

Today Kaldera occupies a foundry on Foundry Road where drums are cast, machined, balanced and burned-in under one roof. We have grown to serve 640 roasteries — but we still ship fewer machines than we could, because every one is finished by hand.

Milestones

The road from one drum to 120 kilos

1994

A foundry and an idea

Two mechanical engineers cast their first 5-kilo drum in a rented Bend workshop, convinced roasting deserved better instrumentation.

2003

The thermal core

We patented the ceramic combustion chamber that still sits at the heart of every Kaldera — even heat, less fuel, cleaner air.

2011

Going commercial

The C-series took Kaldera onto café roasting floors worldwide, with closed-loop control that made profiles truly repeatable.

2018

Industrial scale

The i-series scaled our engineering to 120 kilos without losing a degree of precision — or a note of flavour.

2024

Full electrification

Our electric thermal core cut scope-one emissions to zero on-site while matching gas development time.

What we value

Three principles, cast in iron

Courage & innovation

We ship the harder engineering answer — the ceramic chamber, the closed loop — because it is the one that lasts.

Passion & craft

Every drum is balanced and burned-in by hand. Machines leave Bend only when a human has run a roast on them.

Knowledge & rigour

Thirty years of roast data informs every curve, tolerance and support call. We measure, then we build.
